Day
5
Good
Samaritan
But
he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
In
reply Jesus said: “A man was going down
from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They
stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A
priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he
passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw
him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where
the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and
bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own
donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two
silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,” he said, ‘and
when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
“Which
of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands
of robbers?”
The
expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus
told him, “Go and do likewise.” Luke

Discussion
Example:
Say,
“In this parable/story that Jesus told about The Good Samaritan, has a priest
which is a minister, who walked right past the injured man who was robbed. Just
because someone goes to church, doesn’t mean that their lives reflect their
love of Jesus. This story shows that Jesus wants our lives to be an example of
how He works in our lives all the time, not just at church. I’m keeping the
discussion part short, because your Arts and Crafts Project may take longer
than usual. I want you to have enough time, so that you can tell me the
important parts of this parable, instead of me telling you what they are.”

Arts
and Crafts Example:
You
will need paper, tape, two paper towel, waxed paper, or plastic wrap tubes or
dowels. You will need a box with a window cut out of the side to make a TV type
of screen. The box has to be big enough, but not too big to allow a hole on
other side for the holes for the cardboard tubes, which will turn the movie.
Note the back of the box will need to be cut open for the insertion of the
cardboard tubes with the movie attached and for the people turning the
cardboard tubes. Make sure you tell
them to draw their pictures horizontally, you should show them, because
they are going to be taped side to side to make the movie.
Say,
“Each person is going to draw a part of our movie about the parable Jesus told
about The Good Samaritan and how Jesus would like us to live our lives as
Christians.” Give each student a piece of paper explaining that they have to
decide together which things need to be shown in this movie and decide who is
going to draw each section of it. After it’s all completed, the sheets get
taped together and an extra blank sheet of paper at either end of the movie to
tape around the cardboard tubes inside the TV box. Also, remind them that they
are only to make positive comments to the other class members. We don’t want
anything negative said about anyone’s art work.
After
they put their movie together, have the students tell the story aloud.

Remember
that the back side has to be open to insert the tubes with the movie taped to
them.

Science
Example:
Each
child will need a cup with some water in it plus two straws. Say, “What is your
Hypothesis about what will happen when you drink water out of two straws at the
same time when one straw is in the glass of water and the other is outside the
glass?” Listen to all their Hypotheses.
After
they perform the experiment, listen to all of their results. Explain, “When you
normally suck on a straw, it lowers the pressure in your mouth. The outside air
pressure pushes down the liquid and it goes into the straw as it equalizes the
pressure.
“When
you performed your experiment, the straw outside the cup is continuing to bring
air inside your mouth which kept the pressure the same inside and outside your
mouth, making it difficult to suck in any of the water.
“Since
we are talking about pressure, it’s good to remember that there are lots of
pressures in the world to act a certain way, be friends with only certain
people, and to ignore people who are in need of help or are being bullied by
others. The story that Jesus told us about the Good Samaritan reminds us that
He does want us to stand up for others in need and not give into the pressures
around us to act in ways that wouldn’t make our Savior or our parents proud.”

Game
Example:
Say,
“Today we are going to play: Jesus Says.” This is very similar to Red
Light, Green Light. You will all line up over there and I will stand at the
opposite end. I will face in the
opposite directions with my hands out and will say something like, ‘Jesus says
to be kind to others.’ That’s when you will run toward me. When I turn around
and say stop, those who are still moving forward will have to go back to the
start. The rest will stay where they are and I will continue to say things
like, ‘Jesus says it’s good to listen to your parents.” Kids will continue to
run or walk fast toward me until someone touches my hand. Then, that person
will say things like: ‘Jesus says you shouldn’t lie.’ ‘Jesus says you should
stand up to bullies,’ and so on.”
