House
Built on a Rock
“Therefore
everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a
wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose,
and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it
had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and
does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on
sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against
that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27 NIV®

Discussion
Example:
Say,
“It’s fortunate for us, that Jesus explained things in ways that made it easier
for us to understand the importance, all these many
years later. We don’t want to just hear about Christ this week during Vacation
Bible School and go back to hanging with others who make poor choices. That
would be like the man who built his house on the sand and fell with a great
crash.
“We
want to continue trying to be the Christian Jesus would want us to be,
knowing that when we start slipping, we can turn to our Lord and Savior and He
will strengthen us. We want Christ to be our firm foundation and plan to build
our house on that foundation!”

Arts
and Crafts Example:
(You
can either go outside with the kids to each find a rock to use for this
activity or have a bunch of suitable rocks for them to choose from.) They will
also need glue and clay, play dough, or other modeling substances for building
the house.
Explain,
“You are going to select a rock as your firm foundation on Jesus Christ. Then,
you are going to create a house and glue it to the rock to take home as a
reminder that Jesus Christ is your firm foundation!"

Science
Example:
Each
student needs two strips of construction paper about eighteen inches long by
two inches wide. Say, “You are going to hold two pieces of paper just over your
head about four inches apart and will try blowing in between them. What do you
think will happen?" Listen to all their Hypotheses before doing the experiment
together.
After
they finish their experiment, have them explain what happened. Then say, “When
you blow in between the two strips, the moving air has lower pressure. The
pressure on the outside of the two strips is stronger and pushes the strips
together to fill the area with the lower pressure.
“That’s
why it’s best when we have pressures in life from our friends, TV and others to
make poor choices and do what we know isn’t right, it’s better to choose
friends that are Christians. We want to keep our firm foundation focused
on Christ!”

Game
Example:
Say,
“We are going to play: Rock, Rock, Sand which is played very much like Duck,
Duck, Goose. You will all sit in a circle and I will start off by going around gently
tapping heads saying, Rock, Rock, and when I say Sand, that person gets up
and chases me and when they catch up to me, I say Jesus is Our Firm Foundation.
That way, that person becomes a Christian and taps others on the head. In this
game, no one goes into the middle, since our goal is to try to help all people
come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.”
