Day
3
Salvation
Jesus
took the Twelve aside and told them, “We
are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about
the Son of man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They
will mock Him, insult Him, spit on Him, flog Him and kill Him. On the third day
He will rise again.” Luke 18:31-33 NIV®
[This
passage is after Jesus has arisen from the dead.]
Then
the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to
go. When they saw Him, they worshipped Him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came
to them and said, “All authority in
heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of
all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of
the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of age.” Matthew 28:16-20 NIV®

Discussion
Example:
Say,
“It’s pretty amazing that our Savior would know He was going to be mocked,
insulted, spit on, beat, and killed, and still went through with it. Jesus
Christ loved us so much that He was willing to do all this, die and
arise from the dead, so that we could, someday come to heaven to join Him.
“After
Jesus saw His Disciples after He arose, He gave them a mission. Jesus wanted
them to go to all nations teaching them about Jesus, our Savior, so they could
become baptized, and know the love of Jesus who is the Son of God, our Heavenly
Father, and the Holy Spirit.
“He
wants the same from us, as well. Sure you’re kids, but you can be examples of
how Christ works in your lives, so others see the love of Jesus in your
actions? Tell me some things that you can do?”
Listen
to all their suggestions. Then say, “You’ve talked about lots of good ways to
be examples of your faith in Jesus to others. When you love Jesus, you will
find there are times that He gives you a feeling in your heart through the Holy
Spirit to do things for people on His behalf, like standing up to a bully or going to
get help. Trust those instincts that Jesus gives you to be the example He
wants, whether it’s playing with someone that has been left out or telling the
truth when you know you could get out of it with a lie.”

Arts
and Crafts Example:
Each
student will need a paper plate, crayons, scissors and paper. Say, “Because of Jesus’
death on the cross for our sins, He gave us life eternal. When He arose from
the dead on Easter, we can someday join our Savior in heaven. We are going to make
stencil pictures to represent this.” Show them how to use the paper plate to
draw a cross on the back. (They could also trace the outside of the ruler if
they are having difficulties drawing the lines.)
When
they have finished cutting out their cross stencil, explain that they are going
to color a picture and then put the stencil on it afterward to color over. Tell
them that when they color over the stencil, it will leave the shape of the
cross on their paper to remind us of Jesus’ death and resurrection-rising from the dead, for us!”

Science
Example:
Each
child needs a tarnished penny and each group needs some paper towels, an empty
cup, a cup with water, a salt shaker (can use picnic sized), and some vinegar
and a tablespoon.
Ask,
“What is your Hypothesis about what will happen to this dirty tarnished penny
when you put it in two different substances: salt and vinegar?” Listen to all
of their Hypotheses.
Tell
them that they are going to take two different substances and will put six
tablespoons of vinegar in the cup and stir in two tablespoons of salt. (Each
member in the group could add a tablespoon of one of the substances.) Then,
they are each to put their tarnished pennies in the mixture and take turns
stirring them for a few minutes. After that, they use the tablespoon to spoon
out a penny, put it in the cup with water and then dry it off. (Remind them
they will probably get a different penny, but that’s O.K.)
Afterwards,
discuss, “The tarnish came off the penny when the two substances Vinegar which
is acetic acid and salt which is sodium chloride became a mixture. Together
they became hydrochloric acid and that removed the tarnish from the pennies.”
Continue
to explain, “When we do sinful things in our lives like when we tell lies, when
we laugh when kids say mean things about others, and we get mad, it’s like the
tarnish on the pennies. When we turn to Jesus Christ, who died and arose again
to save us from our sins, it’s like when the tarnish is cleaned off the pennies
in the mixture. Our faith in Jesus and asking for His forgiveness makes us feel bright
and new with a clean heart for our Lord.”

Game
Example:
You
will need either a ball or a tied blown-up balloon that the whole group will
use. Say, “We are going to play: Over and Under with Our Lord.” Tell
them to get into a circle. The first person hands off the ball over their head
and the next person hands the ball off at about knee height. This game
represents that Jesus, our Lord is with us through the highs and lows in our
lives.” (You might even try to sing: Over and Under with Our Lord, if
you’d like.)
